carrying the body of 6-year-old james mat oleo left saint rose a lima church. his family described him as a numbers guy who loved math and recess. soon after the little boy's funeral, the some better scene was repeated. mourners gath he had to say good-bye to jessica rekos, a girl who loved horses and whales. several wakes are also being held this evening for victims of friday's massacre, including one for teacher vicki soto who has been called a hero for shielding students from the gunman. the memorials from the students and teachers grow each day. well wishers are coming to pay their respects. some lit candles. others put cornments on christmas trees. many wonder how the families will get through the holidays. >> can you imagine? that's where my heart goes out to. i can't imagine to have to wake up christmas morning. i wouldn't want to. >> newtown is slowly trying to return to normal.

some schools other than sandy hook reopened for the first time since the shooting. buses carrying children drove on to school grounds. the buses had green and white ribbons on the front. sandy hook scholars. but police kept one elementary school closed as a caution after they received threats. >> we will always be worried. >> reporter: children at sandy hook have not yet returned to school. when they do it will be at a school to the nearby town of monroe. in newtown, connecticut, randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> investigators say the gunman, 20-year-old adam lanza, had fired guns at shooting ranges during the past several years, but there was no evidence he did so recently as practice for the rampage. well, of course everyone is asking what can we do to stop these mass killings. wjz's complete coverage continues. adam may with more on the calls to improve mental health care. adam. >> today's experts in that field say if we do not do more to improve mental health care in this country another school

massacre is pretty much guaranteed. it's been widely reported school shooter adam lanza suffered some kind of personality disorder, but it's still unclear if his family ever tried to get him help to prevent him from turning violent. >> do we want connecticut to happen again? three times? four times? five times? ever again? never. >> reporter: linda kohler is a mental health advocate in baltimore. her organization nami overwhelmed by requests for help every day. >> a mother wanted a teenager to go to a psychiatrist. they could not get in to see someone for six weeks. >> reporter: from the mass shooting in tucson aimed at former congresswoman gab result giffords to the colorado movie theater massacre, killers in many recent mass killings suffered mental illness and failed to get the appropriate treatment. funding for mental health care is down almost $2 billion since 2009. maryland's funding down 4%. howard county executive ken

ullman critical of the cuts. >> i think that mental health has been something that has gotten the support and resources it needs. >> there are a lot of troubled folks out there. we have a culture of violence. you never know what gets in the head of somebody who is not well. >> reporter: over the years many institutions for the mentally ill have disappeared leaving more families to deal with sick children at home. >> mental health problems affect 1 in 10 children. >> reporter: maryland's lady has made education a top prior. >> what it's having now is going to be rippled throughout our communities for years to come if we don't address it now. >> reporter: despite these funding cuts over decades and decades, maryland is ranked one of the best when it comes to access to mental health care. reporting live, adam may, wjz eyewitness news. >> interesting.

thank you, adam. stay with wjz for complete coverage coverage of the tragedy in newtown. we will continue to bring you updates and online at wjz.com. as schools stay wide on a crackdown on facility, a woman pulled a knife at a middle school. wjz is live [inaudible]. mike hell again is there and has details on the response. >> reporter: good evening. a school employee confronted this woman because she never checked in at the front desk. that's when school administrators say she attacked. the second violent encounter on a baltimore city campus in a week happened here at national academy foundation. a woman was buzzed into the locked doors of the prep building where milling schoolers attend classes. administrators say she failed to check in at the front office. they say she was delivering a birthday cake to a relative when a schoolworker challenged her in the hall. she pulled out a knife, cutting

the worker's hands and was later arrested. it alarmed a grandmother of a student here who asked wjz not to identify her. >> i feel fearful for my grandson also. now you have to go through a procedure before he could come out. and i think it's good. >> reporter: she is concerned about outsiders gaining access to classrooms following the shooting in connecticut. >> there is no explaining it away. it's just -- it's awful. it's gut wrenching. >> reporter: school officials would not say why the person was originally buzzed in through the door and how it all escalated into a weapon being pulled. it follows an attack on a 7th grader at calverton middle school last week who said adults, including another parent, allowed on campus beat her as she ran an errand at the principal's office. >> there is nothing you can say. >> reporter: the ceo urged vigilance to keep children safe and school police have been more visable on campuses city-wide.

>> it's a punch in the gut. it's a situation where every parent across the country is struck. we have to keep school safety on the front burner. >> reporter: tonight yet another incident at a city school. friendship academy where a student had a plastic . it was never fired and it was taken away without incident and that school faces disciplinary action. in nearby milford, delaware, a 16-year-old was charged with bring ago shotgun to high school inside his car. police say he didn't threaten anyone and he now is in custody. new tonight there is a tb case on unbc's campus. university officials say the person has been isolated and treatment has begun. right now the university and the health department are notifying people who may have come in contact with that individual so appropriate screening tests could be done. the health department says

there is no need to be alarmed. tuberculosis is very difficult to contract through typical campus live. it is an airborne disease which typically affects the lungs. baltimore county police are warning shoppers in towson about a thief stealing iphones. sunday afternoon two people were robbed of their iphones while shopping in towson town center. a woman sitting on the bench inside the mall had her iphone taken right out of her hands. another was stolen inside macy's. police are looking for two suspects. holiday travel is up this year in maryland. in aaa readdicts 2 million marylanders will take to the skies and roads to see loved once this holiday. >> reporter: the auto club says that travel by car, plane and train are all up this holiday season. no matter what mode of transportation you choose to use to get to your destination, they say that millions of marylanders will get away.

for evan mcewan, the trip home for the holidays has already started. >> about 100 miles. >> he is headed there by car. >> i enjoy the drive. the gas here is better than in philly. >> reporter: aaa says it's the highest volume forecasted for the holiday in over a decade. travel by plane, train and car are all up this year. >> that's actually 1.2% increase over last rear. >> reporter: they say 90% of maryland travelers will hit the roads and drive further this christmas and new year's holiday where the average round trip is 765 miles compared to the 747 last year. some marylanders are already bracing for a long drive. >> it's like an hour and ten minute drive. >> reporter: on the flip side, the auto club says gas prices are the highest they have ever been heading into the christmas holidays. >> a holiday is a holiday. we go whether the gas is $4 a gallon or $3 a gallon. >> reporter: marshal airport says they are bracing for an

uptick in passengers. they have seen increasing traffic over 2012 and they expect the growth to translate into a busy december. >> christmas, much like thanksgiving, is when people want to be with family and friends. it's the end of the year. >> reporter: gas price, airfare, not even the proverbial looming fiscal cliff will stop them from seeing their loved ones. and aaa says the holiday travel for christmas and new year's will kick off this weekend. reporting live in baltimore county, wjz eyewitness news. this marks the fourth consecutive year holiday travel will increase nationwide and in maryland. >> well, what a difference a day makes. take a look. we go from gloomy and cloudy and foggy yesterday to bright sunshine any day. a beautiful, beautiful sunset out there. wjz is live with coverage. meteorologist burnett woods and bob woods updating the

forecast. >> the fog be gone. nothing showing now. we had a couple sprinkles and a few isolated showers around the 11 to 1:00 hour this afternoon. we still have some winds here. that's he the major factor. 18 here. 18 in d.c. eastern shore 10-17. we had gusts as high as 24. even 30 over in washington. tonight the winds will begin to calm down. it's going to be a little breezy tonight and again tomorrow. but still another mild day. burn debt has a look at those temperatures. >> even though it's cooling down right now. we got up there this afternoon to 59 degrees for our high. currently, it is down to 49. you can see in baltimore 52 in d.c. our average high is 44, so we are still above average. on the day, i want to show you this, 59 degrees for the high. that average 44. the record 72. closer to that than the average. now we are going to remain above average tomorrow before big changes kick in with this weather pattern and we will have

that coming up. now back inside. >> we are following breaking news out of east baltimore. there is a water main issue apparently. let's go to sky chopper 13. captain jeff long is on the scene with more. >> good evening. this could be a good sign. steel plates going down over the hole where they have been working on this water main break struck by contractors earlier. and 2600 homes and businesses are currently being affected with a loss of water right now in this area. now, the boundaries -- this is in east baltimore. east baltimore street to the north. marek boulevard to the east. delville to the south and quentin on the west side. and for a couple hours they should be affected. reporting live from chopper 13, captain jeff long. back to you. >> thank you. we will bring you more information as it becomes available. after weeks of deadlock, there are signs of fiscal cliff deal may finally be getting close. danielle nottingham reports for wjz with more on president obama's latest counteroffer to

prevent year end tax hikes for middle class americans. >> house speaker john boehner met with fellow republicans this morning to discuss president obama's fiscal cliff proposal. the speaker also began work on a so-called plan b to prevent a tax increase in case he does not reach a deal with the white house before january 1. >> our plan b would protect american taxpayers who make a $1 million or less. >> the white house quickly rejected boehner's back-up proposal. >> the plan that's been put out there achieves nothing. you would lose hundreds of billions of dollars of revenue. >> reporter: the president initially insisted on lets tax cuts expire for household making $250,000 or more. but the now white house count he proposal raises that threshold to $400,000. and for the first time the president is willing to accept some reduction in future cost of living benefit increases for social security recipients. in addition to his negotiations

with the president, boehner has another challenge. convincing gop consecutives to accept any increases in income taxes. many republicans believe tax increases will hurt small businesses. paige or fanso owns a company that installs voice and data networks. >> there has to be a reform and entitlement. there has to be at least reduction in spending in terms of federal government spending. >> even though the fiscal cliff deadline is the end of the year, congress still needs time to vote on a deal to avoid taxes going up for all americans and across the board spending cuts. in washington, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> and the new cbs news poll shows half of all americans believe a deal will be made before the end of the year. still ahead at 5:00, no more pink and purple. easy bake going gender neutral

explains, it's a long-term solution to what has been a bitter battle between track owners and the horse's states men. >> reporter: after years of debate, all sides have come together and agreed on a lengthy contract that will allow horserace to go continue here in maryland for the next decade. for horseracing fans it's about one thing. >> just the thrill of it. >> reporter: and that thrill will now continue until at least the year 2022. that's thanks to an agreement approved by the maryland racing commission tuesday. maryland will see 146 live racing days in 2013 and at least 100 days of live racing for the next nine years after that. >> you will remember this a decade from now. >> reporter: alan thorman says the deal should give horse men a

strong future. the deal is a win for the maryland jockey club which owns and operates the tracks. the new financial arrangement will allow them to make improvements to their aging facilities knowing they will get a return on their money. the agreement ends years of debate over the two groups over how to save the state's industry. >> we can get down to the business of running the racetrack and doing the best for racing. >> reporter: local fans thrilled to hear their horseracing is safe for the next ten years. >> these people were hurt. i'm glad they got it. i wish they'd double it. >> reporter: racing for 2013 is set it begin in laurel at january 1. racing will begin at pimlico soon after. and the 138th running of the preakness stakes is set. let's check on the roads

with kristy breslin. >> high, everyone. 95 is definitely going to be a tough way to go home this afternoon. a couple of delays in that direction. the first from 395 to white marsh boulevard. very heavy again on the southwest side from 32 past the beltway. as far as other delays go, the west side inner loop looking at 25 minutes from 95 to security boulevard. top side inner loop stop and go over to hartford and a couple spots only moving at 20 miles an hour. counter loop an accident at delaney valley road definitely tying things up. other accidents include northbound 295 at 198 and at loop 3. let's take a live look. a lot of heavy traffic on the beltway around green spring avenue. this traffic report is brought to you by the all new mazda cx5 with the best highway miles per gal of any hybrid in america.

>> thank you. giving back. that's what one ravens player is all about. dozens of kids are going home a little happier today after being taken on a holiday shopping spree with anquan boldin. wjz's rochelle richie was there for all the fun and joins us with more on how some kids say this isn't only a shopping spree but a life lesson. >> reporter: it's a round of applause for ravens wide receiver anquan boldin dozens of students are one step closer to completing their christmas shopping list. >> i think this is great. >> reporter: boldin's foundation made the christmas season more affordable for these kids by handing out $100 gift cards to use in the aisles of walmart on washington boulevard. >> a lot of times people aren't able to afford different things at christmas time. so we're trying to extend our hand as much as possible. >> boldin started accumulating one foundation during his sophomore year with the ravens

and the entire idea around the foundation is to give back to underprivileged kids. these children were chosen to shop. >> give a whole lot extra in class every day. you should be rewarded for that. >> reporter: while video games and beauty products may be on the minds of many, some say it's a good lesson in budgeting. >> i look at the prices now because usually i don't look at prices because i am just a teenager. now that it's his money and my money i'm spending, i'm going to like look at the prices and make it work. >> reporter: and boldin's foundation does it every year and much of it is made possible through donations. kai, back to you. >> thank you. boldin also holds a shopping spree in his home state of florida. felt like florida today, didn't it? >> it was pretty darn close. >> 50s some spots. some spots above the 60s. we have another mild day tomorrow. we will talk about that right now. take a look at temps.

the storm that gave us showers, drizzle, rain, off to the east. up in caribou they may see some snow today. to the west of us a little bit of light snow developing over the southern portion of minnesota. iowa, south dakota, north dakota, a little bit of stuff there. a new storm developing in the rockies is going to head out to the plains. has some energy from the gulf of mexico. warm, moist air behind it. cold air moving in. they could see near blizzard conditions by thursday out across minnesota, nebraska, this area right through here. a stripe of maybe heavy wind-blown snow. that cold airy ventionly is going to be heading out to the east. we will see some temperatures dropping but not until friday. ahead of it some mild air still around the region. a little snow this afternoon across pennsylvania. that's all gone. we are pretty much cleared out. there is a little patch of clouds here in ohio pass together west. we are not concerned about that. there is that low pressure. once that passes south of us

high pressure builds in. nice day wednesday but thursday another why of low pressure with a strong cold front first of all mild air moving in. mild air means rain. behind it, however, as the cold air comes in it will be bringing a lot of cold air to the far western sections of maryland. i expect garrett county only in maryland to see snow showers breaking out sometime thursday, thursday night, continuing friday and saturday. and that's why they have a winter storm watch. just a watch for garrett county and the neighboring counties in west virginia. that will be thursday, friday, and saturday. west winds 10 knots in the bay. bay temp around 47. so tonight down to 34. it will be a chilly night but still above normal. tomorrow back up to 53. another decent day. not as breezy as today with sunny to partly sunny skies. so a nice wednesday with rain likely late in the day on thursday. >> okay. late in the day. thank you. still ahead on eyewitness news at 5. >> i am glad i wasn't on the other side because then i

5:31. clear and 49 degrees. thank you for staying with wjz eyewitness news. here are some of the stories people are talking about. the debate over gun control is picking up momentum in the days since the connecticut school shooting. the death of 20 children may be the tipping point in washington where grieving families from previous gun violence went today to be heard. tatyana anderson has the story for wjz. >> reporter: families of shooting victims came to remember their loved ones. >> my sister was a freshman at virginia tech. >> reporter: and it ask congress for tougher gun restrictions. >> she was 16 years old and my only child. >> reporter: dan gross' brother was shot at the empire state building in 1997. >> 40% of gun sales take place without a background check. no questions asked. so felons, the dangerously mentally ill can get guns.

>> reporter: self-pro gun lawmakers have come forward saying it's time to put gun control back on the table. and the white house says it will push lawmakers to reinstate a ban on assault weapons. >> as the debate grows, at least one gun seller took a big step. dick's sporting goods announced it's suspended sales of guns nationwide because of the shooting. the financial world also got involved. the private equity firm that produces busch master rifles is selling its stake. indiana's newly elected congressman says they may get in the debate. >> they take away freedom for law-abiding folks and they don't take away guns from those who end up being the eventual perpetrators. >> reporter: so far no comment from the national rifle association. even after protests outside its offices. the nra has stayed out of the

conversation. tatyana anderson for cbs news, yonkers, new york. a short time nra said its members are shocked, saddened and heartbroken. they are expected to say more in a news conference scheduled for friday. you never know who will step up and be a leader in a tough stop. in the middle of all the fear and day kai os on friday, a boy offered comfort to his classmates. >> reporter: last friday began as a normal day for luke san tan and his third grade classmates at sandy hook elementary. but things got scary pretty quickly. >> there were about -- now there is something. and we heard gunshots. >> reporter: on the other side of the building the shooter was beginning his rampage. luke's teacher tried to protect her kids. so you're in the classroom and mrs. mckenzie, is she calm? is she excited? how was she?

>> she was crying. >> reporter: mrs. mckenzie was crying? >> yeah. >> reporter: because it must have been pretty scary. >> yeah. but then like our next door teacher said to come to her classroom. >> reporter: so you all went in this? >> yeah, because probably the gunman was going to come in our classroom. i don't know. >> reporter: fortunately for luke and his classmates the gunman never made it to their classroom. but even as they were ushered to safety at a nearby firehouse, the kids were very scared. and luke bravely wanted to help calm them. >> they're crying and i'm like, it's okay. my dad is a cop. he'll like help us. >> reporter: his dad, luke ramirez, is a police officer in the neighboring town of oxford. and he did come. he was one of the first responders on the scene. >> he grabbed me, actually. and i said, oh, i said, you're finally here. what took you so long?

>> reporter: it was a happy ending for the santana family. but for luke it's still sinking in. >> but i am glad i wasn't on the other side because then i probably wouldn't make it. >> reporter: no thought any 8-year-old. ever have to carry. >> sandy hook elementary will remain closed indefinitely. when students are ready to return to class they will attend school in a neighboring town. stay with wjz for complete coverage of the tragedy in newtown. we will continue to bring you updates on air and online at wjz.com. a 90-year-old maryland man is found dead in his home on his 90th birthday and police say his own daughter is responsible. it happened in caroline county. police say arthur cohee was found dead in his home with trauma to his head and neck. his daughter said he had been killed by two intruders. police say her story didn't add up. she is now charged with first degree murder. a huge fire in baltimore

leaves a family homeless today. as mike schuh reports, the fire could have been worse if not for a quick thinking neighbor. >> here is what it sounds like when firefighters must evacuate this burning home. that horn confirmed what bystanders feared. this fire in dundalk was dangerous, big, and getting worse. >> there was a call for a mayday bubo that was a mistake. the firefighter was in the rear of the building. they found him. >> reporter: two kids, 13 and 9, were home alone watching tv. luckily, neighbor ed hurley was out walking his dogs. >> two kids came running out and said a fire i went around real quick. they tried to get the cat or something and i told them no. >> reporter: judging how quickly smoke turned to fire, ed may have saved their lives. >> not even five minutes. i mean, it was quick. it's almost like it exploded. >> reporter: the girlfriend who lives here tells a neighbor she believes the fire started in a

clothes drier. the who us is gutted. children's toys lay ruined. this is a tough time of year to lose what you have. that's why denise is dropping off what she can as nothing inside here is usable. >> just so much has been happening. i just felt the need to do it. >> reporter: unable to return, the family of six is living with relatives around the corner. ed and his wife are collecting donations. >> you with a do the same thing -- would do the same thing if you were walking by. >> nearby neighbors have started a facebook page to collect donations to help the family. we have a link on our website. log on to wjz.com and click on this story. the army psychiatrist charged in the ft. hood rampage won't have to change his appearance for his military trial. a judge ruled major nadal hassan will be allowed to keep his beard. she acknowledged it is a violation of amy regulations but said she won't hold it against him. he studied and worked in

maryland before being assigned to ft. hood. he is accused of killing 13 people on the army base in 2009. freedom for a network reporter and a crew after being held captive in syria. vic in the newsroom with a dramatic escape. >> richard engle and his crew disappeared last week before crossing into syria from turkey. engle believes his kidnappers were a shiite militia group. a dozen gunmen dragged them from their cars. they were subject to mock executions during their five days of captivity. the syrian government tightly controls the movements of foreign journalists. so many sneak into the country. >> the e-mail which triggered the resignation of david petraeus will nettled charges against his mistress. the justice department department dropped their

investigation of paul a broad well. her affair was exposed in a series of e-mails to joe kelly. in those e-mails she warned kelly to stay away from petraeus. he resigned in november after their extramarital affair came public. a push to make easy bake ovens for boys heats up. jessica kartalija explains. >> girls aren't the only ones who are supposed to cook. is in the message we want to send to our youth? >> reporter: that message and thousands of signatures on change.org she got the attention of executives at hasbro. now mckenna has convinced them to change the color of the easy bake oven, making it more gender neutral. >> i want a dinosaur of enrichment she said it all started when her brother, a budding chef, asked for an easy bake oven for christmas. but because of the color, he changed his mind. chefs agree. simon keating a chef at a

team. thousands of people are making the annual trip to the train garden at the weiss avenue fire company. this year it's bigger and better than ever. >> reporter: now in the 32nd year, the weiss avenue train garden is simply amazing. >> we have got ten trains, four levels, two trolleys, two highways, and a whole lot of imagination. >> reporter: the imagination of bill ikener and other volunteers makes it happen. >> it is a lot of work. we are usually working right up to the last minute. in fact, it typically, it's an all-nighter the night before we open. >> reporter: it's all baltimore. there is mr. bo, squyres restaurant, the golden globes of back river and some familiar faces. a labor of love for the guys at weiss and a paradise for train lovers of all ages. >> it involves the entire fire company. we're talking well over 2700 man hours of time constructing it and operating it throughout the

and the weekend, kai. volunteers hope some caring pets will help ease the pain of residents in newtown, connecticut after friday's shooting. gary tuckman reports for wjz on a group from the midwest who brought the therapy dogs to help children cope with their grief. >> reporter: nine golden retrievers on the march to make their way into a recreation center in newtown, connecticut, for an emotional rescue to help comfort the children to survived the attack at sandy hook elementary. they were sponsored and trained by lutheran church charities, transported in a van for a 900-mile from illinois. >> let me give you a quick introduction to the dogs here. this is chewy. this is ruthie. abbey. luther. maggie. hannah. barney. and chamois. these are the comfort dogs.

what is a comfort dog? >> a comfort dog is one who brings comfort to other people when they are suffering or hurting or bringing happiness to people. it helps people process their grief. >> so they are specially trained in. >> they are specially trained. these are all trained service dogs. we don't use them with disabled. we train them and then train them additional to work with all different age groups and people. >> to some people, and we have seen this with children, it brings a sense of calmness in the time of confusion during this period. to some it helps them process their grief. they will start crying and they will hug the dog. and to some children they will come up sad and they'll walk away happy. >> well, the u.s. postal service has dedicated a post office box to newtown so people around the world can send their con dole lesses. for the complete address log on to wjz adam and click on link to numbers. still to come tonight on wjz's eyewitness news, how head coach john harbaugh is dealing
